An antioxidant is a molecule that stops the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation can produce free radicals which create chain reactions within a cell that can potentially damage or destroy the cell itself. Antioxidants stop these chain reactions by completely neutralizing the free radicals, thus removing a major step that could harm cells within the body. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene and vitamins C and E.
Beta-carotene can be found in broccoli, corn, carrots, and peaches. You can find vitamin C in peppers, sweet potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, and of course, oranges. You will find vitamin E in mangoes, nuts, pumpkins, and spinach. And this is but a handful of the foods!
But what can antioxidants can do for you? Due to chain reactions that can harm cells within your body, antioxidants can potentially provide you with health benefits when you take them in food and healthy supplements. The consumption of fruits and vegetables have been tied to the reduced risk of heart disease, and much of that can be attributed to the antioxidants found in the food. Further studies have shown that antioxidants can be used in the treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
